Today, Figueroa works with community managers and boards across the state of Arizona walking properties, solving problems, and helping communities think about their landscapes a little differently.

"I've always believed the best approach is to be someone people enjoy working with, be professional, know your craft, listen to their needs, and provide the right solution," he says. "I genuinely enjoy being out in the field. That's what makes this industry so rewarding."

The focus on relationships isn't unique to Figueroa. It's something that's guided AAA Landscape since the company was founded in 1975.

What started with one truck and one mower has grown into one of Arizona's longest-serving landscape partners for community associations. Today, the Arizona-owned, employee-owned company serves communities throughout the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas.

Even after celebrating 50 years in business, Figueroa declares that the success of AAA Landscape is about more than expansion. “Our goal has always been to build lasting relationships and be the best partner for our clients.” he says. 

The result of that goal is partnerships with Arizona communities that are measured not in years, but in decades. One example that Figueroa is especially proud of is the Desert Ridge community. AAA Landscape installed much of the original landscape during development over 30 years ago and continues to serve as its landscape partner today. The company has also maintained Ocotillo in Chandler for over 20 years. Those relationships, Figueroa says, are what he's most proud of. "Seeing generations of families enjoy the same parks, streetscapes, and common areas that our teams have helped maintain over the years is incredibly rewarding."

What advice would you give to boards about landscape maintenance?

Two things: taking the time to interview your landscape partner, and understanding what services your potential partner offers

"Anyone can mow grass," he says, "The real value comes from managing irrigation, protecting mature trees, improving soil health, reducing water consumption, planning for future improvements, and communicating before small issues become expensive problems."

For community associations, that means choosing a landscape partner who thinks beyond today's work order and helps plan for the years ahead. “Landscape maintenance is one of the largest investments a community makes every year. It should be viewed as a long-term partnership, not simply the lowest number on a bid matrix.”

What trends should Arizona communities be paying attention to?

Water management remains one of the biggest issues facing Arizona communities. Figueroa expects communities to rely more on smart irrigation technology, GIS mapping, detailed reporting, and long-term planning to control costs and conserve water.

What do you enjoy most about working with community associations?

“No two communities are ever the same,” says Figueroa. “Every board, manager, and neighborhood has different goals, which keeps our work exciting.”

Outside of work, Steven enjoys golfing, staying active, cheering on the Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and Sun Devils, and spending time with his wife, Paige, and their dog, Houzzer.

This December, the Figueroas will welcome their first child, a baby boy. Steven says he's looking forward to his newest title: Dad.
