2008 Legislative Session
2007 was a difficult, but largely successful year where our lobbying and grassroots efforts staved off the most seriously flawed legislation and helped to shape and improve other bills. Our grassroots efforts improved greatly, and that was due to the many of you who took time out of your busy schedules, studied the proposed legislation and voiced your opinions. Thanks to all of you who did your part.
While it seems as though we just ended the session, the 2008 Legislative Session is just around the corner. Every year, many bills are introduced which affect Community Associations, the people who live in them and the companies that work in the industry. Each year, CAI’s Arizona Legislative Action Committee (a state-wide organization) works to assist in crafting good, well-reasoned legislation and to prevent poorly drafted, or just plain bad, bills from becoming law.
The past 5 years have seen well over 100 bills, pertaining to HOAs and community associations, introduced into the legislature, and the trend does not appear to be slowing. As you can imagine, keeping track of this volume of legislation is a difficult and time-consuming endeavor and has required the Committee to retain the lobbying firm DeMenna & Associates to assist us.
Fortunately, we have had a good deal of success, defeating a large portion of the flawed legislation and helping to improve and reshape much of what has gone into law. To continue our success, we need your support. We are asking that our community association members help us to help Arizona’s communities by becoming a Community Involvement Partner and donating a minimum of $1.00 per door toward our efforts. For example, if your community has 50 homes, we would ask that you donate a minimum of $50.00. These donations go directly to, and exclusively for, Legislative Action endeavors. Of course, if a particular community association’s governing documents prohibit such a donation, then we simply seek your support and willingness to become involved in the issues and we encourage you to forward this message to each of your owners in the hope that they may choose to make a personal donation.
We also encourage our Business Partners and Management Companies to get involved in this important aspect of our industry. Your companies thrive because Community Associations remain strong and vital and you can help keep them that way. Consider becoming a Corporate Community Sponsor.
Finally, we need to continue improve and grow our Grassroots program. To be a truly successful movement, and to prove that we speak for the majority of those who live in Community Associations, we need your assistance. At a minimum, please fill out the contact information so we can improve and update our grassroots database and get you involved in our Community Action Programs.
Attached is a review of the ways to donate and get involved, and a donation form. Please feel free to contact the Arizona LAC if you have any questions.
Thank you for your time and support!
